Kris will perform the Beatles’ “Let it Be” on Thursday’s results show. His performance will be available for download on iTunes with proceeds going to Haiti relief.

Viewers will also be encouraged to donate during the broadcast.

Kris Allen and Kathy Calvin, CEO of the United Nations foundation took questions today from reporters about Kris’s recent trip to Haiti.

Kris said he made the trip expecting to encounter heartbreak, but instead found hope amongst the people of Haiti. So many people see a brighter future ahead for themselves and their children.

Right now, funds are urgently needed as Haiti enters the rainy season. The devastated nation has managed to avoid water-born diseases so far, but the rains could make the situation much worse. Short term needs right now are tents for shelter and latrines.

Kris says that “It’s insane” how much destruction was caused, and that you can’t imagine it until you see it for yourself. One of the most shocking sights for Kris was seeing the Palace in ruins, “It looked like the Palace of Versailles had been completely demolished,” he said.

Kris would love to go to go back to Haiti for a longer period of time, and made sure on this trip that he didn’t just walk around and look. He helped clear rubble, hand out food and water, and got people registered to work for cash.

He’s really looking forward to coming back to the Idol results show on Thursday, and is really happy “It’s not about me.”

“That feels really good” he said.

The important thing right now, both Kathy and Kris stressed, was the long-term commitment. The outpouring of money right after the earthquake, was phenomenal. But the longterm building is going to take a lot of resources. And, Kathy stressed, money is what’s needed most to fund the Haitian’s upcoming needs.

Asked about his next single, Kris said a decision on that has yet to be made.

“I want to thank Simon Fuller for giving me the opportunity to go out there and hopefully make a difference on what’s going on with Haiti”

Comparing his prior mission trips to his recent trip to Haiti,

“They were all different, I’ve been to a lot of different places, but I did do something similar, because I went to Thailand right after the Tsunami, so I got to see a lot of destruction there, but it was kind of the same deal, there was a lot of happiness and hope in people’s eyes, so that was a great thing. I felt like I saw that in Haiti. You know, the destruction was a lot, and the devastation was a lot more in Haiti, because what happened in Haiti…until you go there, you can see all the pictures or whatever…but until you go there and actually see it, it is insane how much destruction was caused, I think it was kinda the same thing…people were hurt by it, everyone was affected by it, but I think you could see, especially the way the UN was helping and just like the smiles on the kids faces…they know that everything is going to be OK–it’s going to take a long time, but everything is going to be hopefully better than it was.”

A lasting memory that he’ll take away from his experience,

“Katy was not able to go with me…I think there was a lot of lasting memories, but for me, it’s always the kids, I got to go into this women’s tent…it felt like a really safe place. They were taking care of their babies which were like from newborns to maybe two, or something like that…I got to sing a song for them, and hold a couple of babies…they seemed so happy…it was a really cool experience.” What song did he sing? “Amazing Grace”

What will his new single be?

“There’s definitely some talk about what’s going to happen with the new single, but we don’t have anything set in stone.”

What will he be doing on the show Thursday,

“I know for sure that I’m going to be singing a song, and it’s going to be an inspirational type of a thing, and hopefully people can really connect to it, and the performance is going to be sold on iTunes. There’s going to be a way you can text in and help the UN raise some funds for Haiti. I might be able to talk, but I don’t remember if that’s going to happen or not, but maybe so.”

What will he sing on Thursday, and how long will the segment be?

“I’m actually going to sing “Let it Be” and I think the musical segment is going to be 2 1/2-3 minutes long, and there may be some more time where I get to talk, and Ryan gets to talk about the UN and what it’s done. So there may be a little bit of time, after that.

How will he feel about being back on the Idol stage?,

“It’s nerve-wracking, but the thing about this, is that it’s for a completely different…it’s not about me…I think that feels really good. Every time that I was on that stage last year it was about me, and for this it’s not, and it feels like a really good thing to come back there for.”

How did the trip make him feel? Did anything come as a surprise or a shock?

“There definitely was some shock. I think the biggest shock for me was…it was the palace in Haiti, and it’s kind of like a national icon kind of thing, and it was completely in devastation, it was this huge beautiful place, and it looked like the Palace of Versailles had been completely demolished. So, that was pretty crazy. There was definitely some shocking things…I mean there’s buildings all over the place down, people living in tiny little tents that are blazing hot, 6 or 7 to a family. It was a pretty rough experience for them.”

How did it affect him on a personal level?

“When you see something like that, it definitely affects you…it makes you happy for what you have, but it also makes you want to do something to help those people. And I think it’s just kind of an innate human…when you see people hurting, you want to help them.”

Does he plan to go back in the future?

“If I get some time, I would love to go back there and help for a longer period of time. We were only there for 9 or 10 hours, or something like that. I can spend a longer period of time and get my hands dirty.”

What was he able to do the short time he was there,

“We went to a couple of different places, the first place was a camp that they set up with a lot of tents, and they were handing out some food, I got to help out with that, I got to hand out the different kinds of food they were giving out to the people. I got to be a part of a registration thing, where people where getting cards where they could get food, and there’s a cash reward program…I mean there’s a lot of jobs that were just destroyed and people are able to clear the rubble out for money during the day, and I got to help with that..that was hard work, I don’t know how they do it all day…that was definitely some hard work, and I got to do a couple other things, and just talk to the kids and play with them. It was nice for me to get to be involved. I didn’t want to go there and just walk around and look at it, I wanted to do something.”

Has his experiences from the past year made this trip different than his missionary trips? Is it even more humbling?

“I wouldn’t say that it’s more humbling, because I felt like the stuff that I’d seen before was really humbling as well. It was definitely the worst devastation that I’ve seen, and so that was different. When I went to South Africa, and saw all the problems that they had there with the AIDS stuff…that was really rough, but this is on a totally different scale.”

What supplies are needed the most in Haiti? “The thing that, and Kathy touched on this, was shelter, because…and Kathy, you can talk about this..she knows more about this…”

Kathy: “Kris is absolutely right. Shelter. Over the next six weeks the UN is probably going to deliver up to 30,000 tents and enough waterproof sheeting for a million people. They’ve got to build more substantial community centers that can withstand the tropical storms, and I say frankly, latrines. The biggest issue they’ve had is that they have not yet had an outbreak of water-born diseases whether it be dysentery or diarrhea or cholera or malaria, but as the rainy season comes, and some of the camps are actually in the flood plain itself, they’re going to have to move the people out of those…they have a huge logistical challenge ahead. This is something the UN is really good at, and they really know what the system needs to do, but they do need help on housing and sanitation facilities, pretty heavily. And it’s not the kind of thing where people can just send them. They really need the money, because, they have a really effective way of bringing in the stuff that’s absolutely needed and some stuff works in a rainy season and a hurricane area and other stuff doesn’t. While everybody wants to give, and give all of their assets, We really do need to remind people that money is the most effective way to do it, and giving to the UN is the surest way to give it to the people who need it the most.”

Has Kris been watching American Idol?

“No, not completely. I’ve been pretty busy. I’ve seen a couple of people, but nobody…I’ll pay attention more when I meet them on Thursday.”

Does he have advice for them?

“Just go out and do your best, That’s a pretty general thing to say, but, just go out and do what you know how to do.”

Has he noticed anything in general about the cast that’s different?

“Not really, I’d like to say that I’ve seen a lot of the show, but I really haven’t so…but nobody is going to be like Season 8!” (chuckle)

At this point, the moderator reminds everybody to ask questions about Thursday’s show and Kris’s trip to Haiti.

Was it important for Kris to do something hands on?

“I was actually going to do the telethon, and then I was walking into the offices at 19 and Simon Fuller walked up to me and asked ‘How would you feel about going to Haiti’. And I was, like, “That sounds way better! And so, I owe all this to him, and I was able to go, and actually do something…not to…that thing raised so much money and was really moving as well, but to get to go there and be a part and talk to the Haitians and talk to the UN and see all what they were doing was a great thing.”

What would he say to his fans to encourage them to give to the Haiti relief fund?

“That’s the thing about Haiti, there was so much money given at first, but this is going to last, and Kathy, you can talk about this too…this thing is not going away. They need so much help right now. And when I say help, I say they need a lot of money right now. And the UN is doing everything they can right now. Kathy if you want to talk more about it, that would be awesome.”

Kathy: “You raise such a good question, because the outpouring of compassion and giving at the beginning through the American Red Cross and everything was phenomenal, and impressive and empowering but the challenge in all of these situations is, the big ticket item is the long-term rebuilding and recovery. We need to keep people focused on that, and that’s actually, what Americans are really good at, is helping countries build back and become better than they were. This is a country who is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and one of the poorest in the world–8 million people in a very small space. It’s a situation where almost all the damage was done in areas where so many of the people lived. There are some real big challenges going forward and it’s right in our backyard, and I think everybody should want to help out.”

What is the morale like in Haiti?

“We were actually talking to one of the Haitians there that was translating for us, and I think it’s a little split, a lot of people have been really hurt, and have lost most of their family, have lost a lot of their friends, have lost their home–no one’s really staying in a home right now–I think there’s a lot of people who feel like it’s not going to turn around. But there is a whole bunch of people that believe in what’s going on and believe in what the UN is doing, and all the help that they’ve been given and I think that it’s up to the Haitians. We’re there to help them, but I feel like they want it to be a lot better…I think the morale for the most part is pretty good, considering what’s happened to them.”

Kathy: “There was a moment when people thought there would be serious violence in the streets, and if anything, this country has kept its cool, far better than anyone has expected, and it’s been really impressive and you see people really digging in. The fear is mothers with brand new babies and the length of time it’s going to take for hospitals to get back up and running, and that we have a nation with a large number of amputees now, so there’s systemic problems that make it challenging. But Kris is right, we just saw such commitment by the people and gratitude that they weren’t alone, and that others were trying to help them…everybody that can watch on Thursday…it would be greatly appreciated.”

How would you describe conditions in Haiti, are things improving at all?

Kathy: “From the UN Foundation who went in during the very first days after the earthquake, and certainly the folks from the UN who have been there the entire time, there is big improvement, in that people now have found almost all of the people who have died in the quake, and we’ve gotten people into hospitals. Interestingly, people have created their own living spaces and communities. There is a sense of progress. I think the challenge is for people…you just don’t know how long people can live through that kind of dislocated environment. One really interesting thing that has happened is that within the last few weeks, the marketplace has come back into place, you see people selling fruits and vegetables from the fields and that’s exciting to see–an economy coming back. People lost a lot of money and lost the ability to make money, but once there’s a market, you know people will find ways to restore the basic elements of a working system, so I think there’s important progress on things that need to be put in place. The UN is in there for the long hall, and that’s actually something really important that people wanted to hear. Kris even asked, ‘You guys are going to stay here, right?’ (chuckle) And, they’re committed–they were in here for the long haul before, and they’re in here for the long haul now, and I think President Clinton has made it very clear that his role as the special envoy is to continue until we really see Haiti back on its feet.”

What was it like interacting with the kids?

“That was the most incredible thing, and it always is. I’ve done this before and you can always see the hope in kids’ eyes, ’cause they don’t exactly know what’s going on, but some of them…they’re smiling and having a good time, and I think those are the moments that I like to grab onto. I got to hang out with some kids and some little ones. This little kid was playing with a coke bottle, he wrapped a rubber band around the coke bottle and started singing to me, and playing it at the same time. They’re just…they’re making the most out of everything, I think. We can take a lot out from how kids react when stuff like this happens. When I really get to hang out with the kids and play with them and see how they are to see you and to hang out with you for a second…it means so much, you know?”

He learned some Creole? “Uhhh…I tried (laughter)”

“There were definitely shocking things,” he told OK! of his one-day trip with the UN Foundation.

“Buildings down all over the place, people living in tiny little tents that were blazing hot, with six or seven to a family,” he said. “It was a pretty rough experience for them.”

After seeing the destruction, Kris says he has a renewed drive to give back.

“When you see something like that, it definitely affects you and makes you happy for what you have, but also makes you want to do something to help those people. I think it’s just an innate human thing, like when you see people hurting, you just want to help them,” said Kris.

Sound advice as he handled quite a few instruments during his performances on the show including the acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard and the piano.

“But if you can’t do that, obviously eyeliner helps — but not for me,” he laughs, in an apparent reference to his Idol runner-up Adam Lambert.

His deadpan sense of humour is refreshing. In an interview some time before his showcase at the Gardens Hotel last week, Kris did seem rather aloof, but it’s forgivable seeing the strenuous schedule he has been put through since being crowned in the world’s most popular talent show.

In the 15-minute session, he only warmed up almost at the end of the conversation. In fact, this writer had been warned moments before meeting Allen.

Colleagues from other media who had faced him, came out disappointed, what with his monosyllabic answers.

And then there were warnings to steer away from questions related to Lambert. Which was hard, considering that while the flashy glam rocker may have played second fiddle to Allen at the finale, he has kept up with the champion like a shadow ever since, in terms of success.

It was too tempting to see if the Jackson, Arkansas all-American boy would flinch at the mention of Lambert’s name just one more time.

And so, we asked if the gay Lambert being ‘outed’ in some implicating photographs helped 2010 his win in Idol.

“I knew,” he said in reference to Lambert’s sexual preference. But did middle America’s ‘discovery’ of Lambert’s penchant for boas and such help him?

“I mean… people… I guess…,” he trails off, taking time to organise his thoughts.

“How could you have not known?” he says with a wry smile, shrugging.

Still, whether it helped or not, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Allen. He didn’t get much attention throughout the competition, and it was only much later in the Top 11 when Simon Cowell praised him for his interpretation of To Make You Feel My Love noting that the shy lad actually had a shot at the Idol title.

Plus, not to mention, no married individual had seriously posed enough threat to ever take the Idol title prior to Allen’s win.

“Everyone knew I wasn’t single. It was hard… I had hoped that people watching the show would vote on talent, but I know it’s not completely what people consider when they’re voting.

“They’re thinking, can I hang out with this guy? And whether he’s likeable.”

However, Allen admits that his clean boy-next-door image, coupled with his loving husband role helped, as did his religious background.

“I think I’m a relatable guy. I’m a little bit weird to some people… but I think it does play a part.”

Perhaps, Allen’s reluctance to go more in depth during interviews is also partly due to the media’s tendency to focus on fluff and trivial matters.

After countless interviews, one of the most asked questions is how much has his life changed post Idol. Even in the Press conference prior to the interview, Allen was asked those exact words by a member of the Malaysian Press.

“I can only answer that I’m in Malaysia,” he says, shrugging off the obvious.

Allen may come off misunderstood to some, appearing bored at mundane queries but the folksy rocker is a serious artiste who appears to be coming into his own.

While others may jump for joy at an offer to release an album within months of winning Idol, Allen realised that there was much to do.

“Making an album, there are things that I would want.” And while he says he feels “pretty good at how the album turned out,” it was clear that it has not met his own personal expectations.

So much so, that even the ‘coronation tune’, No Boundaries, co-written by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, did not make it into his debut — breaking away from Idol tradition.

“Well, I just felt there were better stuff to put on the album.

“The studio version is on iTunes, if people wanted they could get it there but I feel that it has run its course.”

While staying away from reading album reviews, Allen is aware that he has yet to find his sound.

The critics have been quick to point out his albums lacks maturity and direction as opposed to Lambert’s debut.

And that doesn’t even include the updated comparisons on the sales of their respective albums. The comparisons don’t irk him, especially when he avoids reading reviews, but Allen finds the whole scenario amusing.

“It’s not disturbing, but it’s funny that people would even try comparing him to me.

“It doesn’t make sense at all because he does his thing and I do my thing and it has worked for both of us.”

As for lack of direction — he admits that writing and producing is hard.

“And to come off the show and go straight into that kind of thing…” he said.

“For the second album, I want to write all the songs and I definitely want to spend more time in production. Ask anybody how you can make an album in four short months.

“I want to spend months and months sitting down by myself and write songs and really perfect a lot of stuff.”

Allen hints at a shift in his music, and it should come as no surprise if he pulls a Kelly (former Idol Kelly Clarkson), who changed her sound after her debut upon being given more creative freedom.

So how different will Kris Allen be in the future?

“I don’t know how different. For me maybe a little bit more raw, emotionally heavy.”

Still, despite the pop machinery at work, Allen is thankful for it all. He says he is clueless as to what he would have done without Idol, not having industry connections and having exhausted his avenues playing small bars.

“I’m just glad it all worked out. The first person I worked with was with David Hodges and he had worked with a lot of big names like Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry and come off after being part of Evanescence.

“I got a little intimidated with the Grammys and all he had in his home.”

Hodges has also written and/or produced for artistes such as Amie Miriello, David Archuleta, Anastacia, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys as well as Dashboard Confessional amongst many others.

And he’s also in the writing credits for Lambert’s upcoming album, of course.

As for his album, Allen says that the inclusion of the cover of Heartless is the last time he includes reworked tunes.

Despite his many enjoyable interpretations of big tunes in the show, there is almost no chance of any of them making it to future studio albums.

“Can’t imagine that I would (include reworked tunes). All the songs I did on the show, I really loved, definitely suited a live show. But I really can’t imagine I would record them cause it’s already been done.”

Meanwhile, Allen’s continuing his tour around the world for his fans, discovering and ‘enjoying’ new things like the ‘balut’ (a fertilised duck or chicken egg with a near developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten with the shell).

Or maybe not. “I’d rather just eat a hard boiled egg,” he smirks.

After individual sets, the ‘American Idol’ trifecta come together for a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy.’

The “American Idol” stars aligned Friday night (February 12), as Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen took the stage for an exclusive live event.

Ryan Seacrest’s “Rock My Town” concert brought out hundreds of lucky ticket winners, all of whom braved the cold for hours to make sure they got the best possible spot in the intimate Highline Ballroom.

Those who stayed were treated to a surprisingly loud Allen set. It smartly kicked off with his much-lauded cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless,” which has now evolved into a mash-up with the Coolio oldie “Gangsta’s Paradise.”

Later on, he played another ditty that earned him raves on “Idol,” the Swell Season’s “Falling Slowly,” except now Allen adds a few measures of U2’s “With or Without You” into the mix, making the song feel even more sweeping and emotional. So much so, in fact, that Glen Hansard stole Kris’ unique arrangement for a Swell Season show earlier this week, a tidbit Kris was eager to share with the crowd. (Allen also played his Michael Jackson week offering “Man in the Mirror” but left it untouched, presumably out of respect for MJ, whom Kris called “one of the greatest ever.”)

Allen’s been on the road the most out of the three on the bill, and it has paid off handsomely. His bandmembers sound like they have been playing together for years, and his stage presence has improved tremendously since his days on “Idol.” He no longer looks awkward when he performs without a guitar. In fact, “Can’t Stay Away,” “Written All Over My Face” and his cover of the the Beatles’ “Come Together” all showed off a newfound — dare I say it? — rock-star swagger that delighted the Kris fans bopping in the audience (even if nobody passed out, as Kris jokingly said was his goal for the night).

Even more exciting was when Allen and his band opened up the arrangements to his album songs. “Red Guitar” and “Is It Over” both approached jam-band territory at certain points, giving the 12-song set a dynamic ebb and flow.

The crowd cheered the loudest for Allen’s single “Live Like We’re Dying” (and least for the sore thumb of the night, the Pat Monahan-penned ballad “The Truth”), but the highlight was the infectious sing-along “Alright With Me.” Kris grabbed five fans out of the front of the audience to help sing backup. (A sixth “straggler” joined them.) As he helped one girl up, she suffered from “pants on the ground” syndrome, giving the crowd a nice view of her underwear. Allen, being a Southern gentleman, blushed as he stammered, “Oh gosh! Don’t … don’t look.” (It’s also important to note that Kris neglected to choose the ballsy fan who had thrown an Adam Lambert T-shirt at him earlier.)

Moments after Kris left the stage saying “Kradison thanks you,” Allen’s band returned for an encore, except this time they brought Lambert’s guitarist Monte Pittman with them. The crowd buzzed. Could it be? Would fans be treated to a one-of-a-kind collaboration?

Turns out, yes. Kris, Allison and Adam all traded verses on an electric cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” in an epic collaboration that played like a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame jam session: “Idol” edition. As Kris mentioned earlier in the night, “They’re my family, dude,” and that familial bond was on full display. While wailing into their mics, Adam picked up Allison, Allison draped herself on Kris, and Kris and Adam sang to each other while frenzied fans in the crowd desperately tried to keep up with their camera phones. When it all ended, the audience was in full flail mode.

If only those early exiters knew what they were missing.

The American Idol winner has revealed that he cried during Jennifer Aniston’s 2008 film Marley & Me.

And it wasn’t because of Aniston’s dreadful acting!

“I was in my hotel room & I started watched Marley & Me again,” Allen said of the last time he burst into tears.

“The first time I watched it, I cried on the plane. Then this time, I was like, ‘I am going to make it through’, But I didn’t! I cried like a little baby.”

Kris, 24, recently admitted he feels like an underdog — despite winning Idol.

“Some people still don’t know how I won the show,” said the hunky star, who released his self-titled debut album this past November.

“Not in an I-need-to-prove-myself way. I’m very understated. It worked out on the show, and I think it’s going to work out in my career, too.”

He has been dubbed the “most successful underdog” in American Idol history. In the beginning, no one remembered who Kris Allen was – he just managed nine seconds of screen time during the audition stage while his opponent, Adam Lambert, dominated the screen. And yet, he won.
And now, he’s right here in Malaysia!

The soft spoken, guitar-playing Arkansas sweetie is in Kuala Lumpur for one day to meet fans, sign autographs and sing in a showcase at the Gardens Ballroom, The Gardens Hotel, today.

Since his mind-blowing win on Idol, Allen’s been on his toes – he’s been on tour with the rest of the American Idol crew (the top 12), he’s had countless TV appearances on American talk shows like The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, The Late show With David Letterman, Access Hollywood, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live With Regis And Kelly and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and he’s recently released his debut album, Kris Allen.

How’s he been coping?
“It’s been crazy. My life has changed completely. I live in a different place now … my wife and I just moved into a place in LA and I’m never at home.
“I get to come to the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia … it’s really been crazy and exciting at the same time,” said Allen in a telephone interview with The Star last Friday.

It certainly has been a whirlwind for Allen. After winning the Idol title last May, he embarked on the Idol tour with his fellow Idol mates (the top 12) and then started work on his self-titled debut album.

“I feel like I should be catching my breath, but sometimes my mind doesn’t allow me to do that,” he said.

Despite the hectic pace, Allen is happy in the direction his career is going.

“I feel pretty good about how everything is happening, you know. I have a lot of creative freedom and that’s great. I’m not saying that I haven’t had help from anyone because I have had a lot of help from a lot of people. I am new to the industry and so, I do need a lot of help,” shared Allen.

Allen’s first single, Live Like We’re Dying (produced by The Script’s Andrew Frampton, Steve Kipner, Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan) is a catchy track about making the best of the time we have.

The single, Allen explained in an earlier interview, is an indication of the kind of songs he loves to do.

Allen explains: “This first single is a really good introduction to what the rest of the album is going to sound like. It’s raw and has an organic feel. Sometimes we forget that we have one life. This is it. At times, we forget about the nicer things that make life worth living – like relationships or nature. It’s a great message.”

Breaking away from tradition, Allen’s Idol “coronation song”, No Boundaries (written by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi), is not included on his major-label debut. However, a newly recorded version of Kanye West’s Heartless, which he covered on Idol, is included as a bonus track.

Allen has writing credits on nine of the 12 tracks on the album, including one solo credit for Red Guitar, a song that he wrote prior to participating in American Idol.

In an interview with popeater.com Allen shared: “I bought a red guitar for my wife for her birthday and she never played it (laughs), so we ended up sticking it on the wall in our house – it was a horrible guitar, just like a US$50 guitar but it was a good house decoration.

“And one day, I picked it up and tuned it and started playing it, and this song just became kind of a metaphor for how I feel about my wife. It was nice to get that one on the album because it was something from before the Idol stuff and I feel like it’s an amazing song. It shows who I am as a songwriter and as a musician.”

The album, Kris Allen, sold over 80,000 copies in its first week, entering the Billboard 200 at No.11. It has sold around 245,000 copies to date.

On writing his own music, Allen says: “It feels really good. When I tried out for American Idol, my goal was not to win. It was to go out and hopefully do well enough that I could have the opportunity for a music career.”

While there are a slew of artistes he would love to collaborate with, Allen singles out British singer Adele as a top choice, should he be given one.

“It would be fun to write with Adele, actually. She seems like a fun girl to write with. I’m still new in the music business – it was funny, they would be like: ‘You’re going to write and produce with this guy’, and I’d be like, ‘OK!’ I didn’t know who it was, so I would look them up on Wikipedia.

“When I went to work with Mike Elizondo, I had no idea who he was. I went on the Internet and it was like Dr Dre, Eminem, Switchfoot, Maroon 5, Fiona Apple and a bunch of people (associated with him), and I was like, ‘What’s he doing with me?’

“I ended up going to his house many, many times and working on a lot of songs with him,” he told popeater.com.

Allen is also aware that he is still “in competition” with his Idol compatriot Adam Lambert with albums that came up almost back-to-back. However, it’s not something that he is worried about.

“I’m just really happy for Adam and I know he’s happy for me, too. Even on Idol it was never really a competition between the both of us. We were just doing our own thing, you know,” said Allen.

For his Malaysian fans, Allen is looking forward to putting on a great show they’ll remember for a long while.

“In a showcase, it’s really quite hard to show people what a concert of mine will be like, but it will be fun. I’m going to have a little fun and put on a great show.

“I have a great band backing me up and it’s going to be a good show. My fans will have fun,” said the extremely polite Allen.

As he takes the stage at the press conference for Musicfest 2010 at the Eastwood Mall Open Park on Feb. 3, the excited local fans that turned up on a breezy Wednesday afternoon welcome their idol with all sorts of cameras clicking up in the air.

“It’s definitely warm here,” Allen attempts to joke. Knowing that “American Idol” has a lot of fans in the Philippines, Allen—who visits the country for the first time—says in gratitude, “It feels really good [to be here]. It’s great to see you guys.”

Headlining Musicfest 2010 alongside YouTube sensations-turned-mainstream act Boyce Avenue and the sensational, jaw-dropping dance crew Jabbawockeez, Allen is expected to perform cuts from his 2009 self-titled album.

With some urging from both the media and the fans, the Jackson, Arkansas-born singer/songwriter gives in to doing an a capella demo of what the concert holds in store for attendees. Singing the first few lines from his album’s opening cut, “Live Like We’re Dying,” must have sent those still without tickets on a bee-line to the reception table selling them.

While it seems the Filipinos have openly declared Allen as their new idol, Allen is still just getting used to the idea. “I have a friend that’s Filipino-American… that’s kind of it, though,” he says when he is asked if he’s had any sort of Filipino influence in his life.

We’ll leave it up to the Filipino fans to leave their mark with Allen and his band when they finally take the stage and rock it at Musicfest 2010.

It’s not enough to know the tunes. For fans, these little details are just as important. Here are the things we learned during Kris Allen’s short meet with the media and the fans on Feb. 3:

Kris rocks it with his band composed of Cale Mills (guitar/keyboards), Ryeland Steen (drummer), Chris Torres (bass) and Andrew DeRoberts (lead guitars).

During the press conference, Kris jokes about Cale being a Cosmo Bachelor of the Year. A quick search online reveals that Cale has indeed landed on the list of Cosmo Bachelors 2009. His profile even has his email address, so what are you waiting for, girls?

Kris Allen’s dream collaboration: with Sir Paul McCartney. “I’m a huge fan of his,” he says. “But it’s definitely a dream, though. It’s not gonna happen.”

Kris still has no clue on what would be the second single off his album. “But you know what’s funny… I was in a car earlier today [after doing a promotional appearance] and I heard ‘Before We Come Undone’ on the radio and it freaked me out…” Guess Manila’s radio stations beat his label to it!

Gone are the days when pop stars would never reveal that they were married. Kris does not mind discussing it… to an extent. While he reveals music may not have played into starting his relationship with wife, Katy—he says he’s never serenaded her—he does admit that she played violin and he played viola in the same band. “Don’t applaud that, it’s not cool,” he says with a lazy smile.

Kris reveals how his song, “Red Guitar” came about: “I bought a red guitar [for my wife] and hung it on the wall ‘cause she never played it. So I took it and started playing and that’s what came out.”

“Live on TV is the worst thing in the world,” he declares. When press conference host Mo Twister asks how he’s able to concentrate during the “Idol” live shows, Kris replies, “I got in trouble a lot when I didn’t look into the camera when they wanted me to…”

According to band mate Andrew, “Kris would rather get up and play without a set list than make one.” Kris, meanwhile, says he prefers playing shows than being on TV because, during shows, they can do pretty much what they want.

His favorite past “Idol” winner is Kelly Clarkson. “She’s incredible… [She’s] been through a lot of crap thrown her way… it’s incredible. She’s the queen of ‘Idol’…”

When asked to weigh in on Simon Cowell’s announcement that he’s leaving “Idol” soon, Kris says, “It’s going to be sad just because he’s been there since the beginning, but I think the show’s gonna go on…”

And when asked how he thinks he would have fared if Ellen DeGeneres had been a judge during his season: “I would like to think that she’d like me… I think she would be hard on me, though, just because she likes me…”

What he’s got on his music player: “Oh geez… a lot of different things. I listen to MGMT a lot. [I listened to the] Switchfoot record the other day… it’s good.”

The one thing that a fan should never ever do: “I had a girl stick a tongue inside my mouth. That was the craziest… That was a little too much,” he says, shaking his head. The man’s got a wife, people!
